SUSCON GREEN vine weevil control; new formulation update.
22-Mar-2011
As many growers are now aware Suscon Green Soil Insecticide has been withdrawn from the market place with a new formulation scheduled to be available this April/May. However, the approval has been delayed. Fargro, who will be marketing the new formulation of Suscon Green in the UK, commented;
“The product has been submitted to the CRD (Chemicals Regulation Directorate) but is going through the revised regulatory system which is more challenging. Nufarm and Fargro are confident that the questions raised by the CRD can be fully addressed and this is underway. However it is clear that approval is unlikely to be in place for the 2011 season...”
In this case growers will need to plan their vine weevil control strategies for 2011 without the use of Suscon Green Soil Insecticide. That leaves some of the following options* which are all available through Dejex Supplies:
Met52: A biopesticide based on a fungus which provides prolonged control of vine weevil larvae when incorporated into growing media. Download further info here.
Imidasect: Provides short term control of vine weevil larvae when incorporated into peat based media, but does not provide more than a few months control, therefore, generally unsuitable for nursery stock.
Intercept: Formulated for incorporation into growing media, the Intercept compound is readily absorbed by roots and translocated to aerial parts of the plant to give protection against pest attack. Among the pests that are controlled are whitefly, aphids, sciarid fly and vine weevil.
Exemptor: Is also formulated for incorporation into growing media. It is effective against aphids whitefly, leaf beetles and vine weevil. Exemptor can provide up to 1 year of vine weevil control.
Nematodes: A biological control applied by drenching the growing media in the autumn and spring.
If you would like any further information on the above products, including prices and availability, please do not hesitate to contact us at Dejex Supplies.
*These are indicative options of products that may be used to control vine weevil, these may not be suitable in all situations, and this list does not constitute a recommendation. Growers should consult a BASIS trained professional before deciding on a vine weevil control strategy.
